A case of the Mondays

Posted by Carl on August 6th, 2007 filed in Personal, Work

So… this morning I awoke around 4:30a and my first thought - aside from noting that it was way f’ing early - was: “I feel great!  Today’s going to be an awesome day.”

I was wrong.  The gods hated me today.  I failed.  My chi was bad.  I lost the race.  You get the idea.

Upon doing my ‘normal’ morning routine of checking my email… making some quick breakfast… showering… etc… I realized that I needed to return some Redbox movies we got yesterday.  So - at 6:15a I jumped in the car with my work ‘baggage’ and headed over to Harris Teeter.  Knowing that I was going to the ‘Teeter I decided not to pack a lunch…  I’d just get a sandwich there!!  I’m so resourceful.

I was saddened to find that my usual ‘Teeter that I’ve come to know and love and have faith in it’s 24/7-ness was in fact closed.  Apparently, they needed to have their floors re-done.  Sigh.  Ok.  No biggie - I’ll just have to leave work *promptly* at 5p so that I can get the movies returned before being billed for another day.  Off to work I go!

Attempting to continue on the track of getting my lunch squared away in advance - I hit up the Food Lion near the office.  It was closed.  Just so y’all know… the Food Lion near 40 & 55 opens at 7a.  All signs point to me figuring out my lunch later.
Expecting that this was just a slight bump in my day and that I was still off to a fantastic journey through predictable work-craziness… I thought nothing more of it.

Unfortunately, I entered the office to the pleasant sound of UPS’s alarming and finding that our office wifi was “unhappy”.  My good ol’ boys & girls at the office had eight servers with uber amounts of  power draw plugged into four teeny tiny UPS’s.  At some point over the weekend - they all tripped due to load.  Thus killing the power to ‘em all as well as the wifi that was also pulling power from them.  Sigh.  6:45a and I’m re-wiring all the servers and power cables.  I left the SAN off; if anyone cares.  Double sigh.

I make up a healthy sized mug of tea and attack my email.  Although I stayed out of my work email over the weekend - others hadn’t… I had me some reading to do.  Ya know - I get sooo much done early in the morning before the office gets goin’.

All around about 8:45a one of my crew comes to me and asks “to talk privately” soon.  This can’t be good.  It wasn’t.  Well - it wasn’t for us.  For our help desk person it’s good news…  she’s moving to NYC to start fresh in life.  Congrats to her, however, she’s amazing and awesome so I’m down a person on an already short staffed team.  Blah!  Grr.

Today’s not really shaping up to be all that great.  I’m starting to seriously re-think my “it’s gonna be a rockin’ day” attitude.

Sadly - today was one of the worst days so far in terms of other Managers suffering from “it’s not my problem!” and lack of respect for what others have to deal with.  Ya know what.  GROW THE FUCK UP!  Why oh why does it feel like I’m one of the only people treating my role like a *career* and others act like they just have a *job*?  This is really starting to get discouraging.  It’s kinda rough to always be fighting up hill battles and having a lot of spectators.  Anyway.

That little tid-bit of fun was the bulk of my day.  Good ol’ 4p comes around and apparently we have a server throwing errors.  Gah!  Damn.  So…  off to scramble to figure out wtf to do - plan for a “scheduled” downtime - gear up the team with toys & stuffs - and expect a 2hr midnight downtime.

Crap.  About that time I remember the movies sitting in my car and bolt for the door at 5:20p-ish.  Just my luck - traffic bites badger balls.  Traffic is never bad on Mondays!!  Good god.  Anyway.  I make it to the ‘Teeter - drop off the movies - and battle the parking lot & traffic.

6:15p.  I’m home.  Finally.  Tomorrow’s going to be better.  It has to.

Oh ya - 32 days until vacation.  I need this one bad.
